You can enroll during your Initial Enrollment Period (IEP), which is a 7-month window around your 65th birthday. You can also enroll during the Annual Election Period (Oct 15 – Dec 7) or a Special Election Period if you qualify.
Original Medicare (Parts A & B) is administered by the federal government and allows you to see any provider that accepts Medicare. Medicare Advantage (Part C) is offered by private insurers, often includes Part D drug coverage, and may offer extra benefits like dental and vision — but typically requires you to use a network of providers.
It depends on your plan. HMO plans generally require a referral from your primary care physician. PPO plans typically do not require a referral and allow you to see out-of-network providers at a higher cost.
Extra Help (also called the Low Income Subsidy) is a federal program that helps pay Medicare Part D costs. You may automatically qualify if you have full Medicaid, receive SSI, or are enrolled in a Medicare Savings Program. Others can apply through Social Security.
Yes. People who qualify for both Medicare and Medi-Cal are called "dual eligible." Medi-Cal can help cover costs that Medicare doesn't pay, such as premiums, deductibles, and copays. However, you cannot have both Medi-Cal and a Medicare Supplement plan at the same time.
